Changing Lives Through Care Home Optometry
In the heart of Swindon, a remarkable journey unfolded last year when we embarked on a project that allowed us to meet two extraordinary individuals, Jackie and Gordon. These two remarkable souls, both residents of Ridgeway Rise Care Home, graciously agreed to feature in our Care Home Optometry Video Series.
In the UK, over 400,000 elderly individuals reside in care homes. Many of them face the challenges of compromised vision, which can significantly affect their independence and overall quality of life. At OutsideClinic, we are on a mission to grow our care home optometry team, with the aim of transforming the lives of more care home residents like Jackie and Gordon through the gift of corrected vision.
Our journey with Jackie, Gordon, and the Ridgeway Rise team began with a magical day of filming back in September 2022, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff, caregivers, and the talented filming crew from OttrWorks who made this day possible.
A Day to Remember
Stepping into Ridgeway Rise, we were welcomed into more than just a care home; it was a haven of warmth and compassion. The privilege of meeting some of the remarkable residents, including the delightful Jackie and her daughter Lesley, as well as the charming Gordon, was an experience that left an indelible mark on our hearts.
Their stories and interactions served as powerful reminders of the profound impact that a caring environment can have on the lives of residents. It was a testament to the belief that every individual, regardless of their age or circumstance, deserves to live life to the fullest.
Jackie: A Glimpse of Joy Amidst Dementia
For Jackie, a resident living with dementia, the day of filming brought forth pure joy. It was a journey back in time, to the days when she dabbled in acting and found solace in the world of performing arts. Her infectious enthusiasm filled the room, making it evident that she was in her element.
But there was something truly special that shone through the day - the heartwarming presence of Jackie's daughter, Lesley. The bond between mother and daughter was palpable, and it added an extra layer of warmth to the day's proceedings. Lesley's unwavering support and the joy she brought to her mother's life was evident in every interaction.
Our dedicated optometrist, Vishal Khurana, played a pivotal role in ensuring that Jackie felt comfortable throughout the filming process. It was a moment of triumph when our dispensing optician, Emma, found the perfect pair of glasses for her. In that instant, we witnessed the transformative power of clear vision, rekindling the spark of a performer's spirit within Jackie.
The presence of Lesley, a pillar of strength and love in Jackie's life, was a testament to the power of family and the difference it can make in the lives of those residing in care homes. It was a day where the bonds of family and the gift of improved vision intersected to create an unforgettable experience.
Gordon: A Cheeky and Endearing Character
On the other side of the spectrum, we had the pleasure of meeting Gordon, a character who radiated charm and humour. Our filming briefly interrupted his cherished television time, but it was heartwarming to see him in his own room, surrounded by cherished items and memories from his past. Family photos adorned the walls, serving as a testament to the life he had lived and the people he held dear.
In the midst of our time spent with Gordon, we learned about some of his favorite indulgences. His love for Cornish lager, peppermint sweets, humbugs, and shortbread added a delightful touch to our day and further enriched our connection.
Throughout the day, laughter echoed in Gordon's presence, and stories flowed freely. It was a day filled with shared moments and storytelling, reaffirming the importance of human connection and the profound impact it has on the well-being of care home residents.
