Ready for a change of pace and a new adventure? Sam Westoby's journey with us could be just the inspiration you need. Working at an independent in Edinburgh Scotland, Sam was feeling a little stagnant in his career, longing for something more challenging and fulfilling.
That's when he discovered OutsideClinic where he was intrigued by the prospect of working in a more flexible and rewarding way.
Joining us in 2021, Sam has since taken hold a great relocation opportunity with us and has moved from Scotland to Cornwall. Let's hear from Sam about his experience.
OC: Hi Sam! Congratulations on the move! How are you finding your new home?
Sam: We've been here for three months now and have absolutely loved our time in Cornwall so far. The pace of life is entirely different from Edinburgh—everything is laid back and relaxed. We found a lovely house in the countryside, and for the first time, we have a garden. We've been experimenting with new plants and are looking forward to sitting out in it this summer.
OC: That's great to hear! Have you had the chance to explore the area?
Sam: Yes, very much so! Everywhere we go is somewhere new to explore, and everyone is very welcoming. I've been getting lots of tips from patients on places to visit. We feel spoilt by the number of beaches nearby—my favourite so far has been Gwithian, which is perfect for a sunset walk after work.
OC: It sounds like you made a fantastic relocation choice. Can you tell us a bit about why you decided to join OutsideClinic?
Sam: Before joining, I was working in an independent practice in Edinburgh, but it started feeling quite monotonous. I felt trapped in the routine and needed a change. Domiciliary optometry caught my interest because it seemed more rewarding. I wanted to make a real difference, and I can honestly say that joining OutsideClinic has given me that.
OC: How does working in domiciliary optometry compare to the high street?
Plus, having weekends off makes all the difference. Hannah and I can plan our weekends and explore our new home together, which has been amazing.
OC: What about your experience with patients? Has that changed as well?
Sam: Definitely. I love that I’m with the patient throughout the entire journey. We build rapport, and I can give them a tailor-made experience that meets their specific needs. Being in their home also helps me make more meaningful recommendations to directly improve their quality of life. I've met so many lovely patients, and being able to spend that extra time with them is incredibly fulfilling.
OC: What do you enjoy most about working for OutsideClinic?
Sam: The quality of the equipment is excellent—we’re really working at the leading edge of domiciliary eye care. And the support from the team is fantastic. It can be easy to feel lonely in domiciliary work, but at OutsideClinic, we’re always in touch. I have great communication with the Scheduling team, other optometrists, and my regional manager, whose support has been outstanding. I really feel part of a team.
OC: It sounds like you’ve found the perfect fit. Are you happy you made the switch?
