10 myths about domiciliary audiology busted
Thinking about a career in domiciliary audiology but have some concerns? Let’s set the record straight by busting some common myths.
Myth 1: There’s no support
At OutsideClinic, you’re never alone. Our dedicated clinical services team, led by Clinical Lead Audiologist Ian McKendrick, is always just a phone call away. Ian oversees our fully automated onward referral system, ensures audiograms for GPs are accurate, and his team serves as your direct point of contact whenever you need guidance.
You’ll also be supported by our team of qualified hearing care assistants, so you always have expert advice when you need it.

Myth 2: I won’t be able to do hearing aid demonstrations
You’ll have your own choice of demo hearing aids with you, which can be programmed during the test to give patients a real-time experience. This allows them to talk to family, adjust the TV volume, and experience the benefits of hearing aids in their own home before making a decision.

Myth 3: Patients won’t be expecting me
Our scheduling and customer service teams call patients the day before their appointment to confirm as well as reminder emails and text messages, so they’ll always be ready and expecting you. No unexpected arrivals - just smooth, efficient visits.

Myth 4: I won’t know where I’ll be day-to-day
Your schedule is planned weeks in advance, giving you clarity on where you’ll be working. Addresses are also confirmed the day before, so you’ll always know exactly where you’re headed.

Myth 5: Domiciliary audiology isn’t clinically sound
We are IQIPS-accredited - having maintained this gold standard for six years. Our commitment to clinical excellence ensures you’re always working to the highest standards of care.

Myth 6: I’ll be driving all over the country
Your work area is typically within a 1 hour 15-minute radius of your home postcode. Patients are usually within 60-70 miles, with just 10-15 minutes of travel between each appointment.

Myth 7: I can’t dispense on the day
Yes, you can. You’ll have click-and-fit stock with you, meaning that when appropriate, patients can be fitted with hearing aids on the same day.

Myth 8: I’ll have to wait in for deliveries
We provide a secure postbox, and deliveries arrive via courier with access codes, so you never have to wait around. If needed, we can also send packages to a local lockbox for added convenience.

Myth 9: I’ll be working late if I have to travel
A typical day includes five tests between 9 AM and 5:30 PM. Your travel time is factored into your schedule, ensuring you maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Myth 10: I can’t perform wax removal
If you're qualified, you can. Once you've settled into your new role, you'll be provided with all the necessary equipment to carry out safe and effective wax removal on the day when needed.

Domiciliary audiology offers a well-supported, clinically sound and incredibly rewarding career. It gives you the ability to escape the clinic and see patients in the environments they will be using their hearing aids. If myths have made you hesitate, we hope this has helped clear things up.
