Celebrating Jhanara: A journey of family, weekends rediscovered and heartwarming patients
In a world where professional commitment and genuine patient care are the cornerstones of a fulfilling career, Jhanara Islam, our esteemed optometrist, commemorates a remarkable 14 years of unwavering service with OutsideClinic. Her journey with us has been marked by passion, dedication, and heartwarming patient experiences that have transcended the mere confines of optical solutions.
"I've been with OutsideClinic for 14 years this October, and it is the most rewarding job ever! The patients are so appreciative of what we do, and there is no better feeling than hearing your patient say: 'that was the best test ever' or 'I'm so glad it's you again this year'."
Making a Difference, Changing Lives
Jhanara's story began with the enticing promise of no weekend work—a gem for any newlywed. However, what she didn't foresee was the profound joy she'd find in her role. Her love for the profession was kindled by the sincere appreciation she receives from her patients.
"The rewarding aspect of the job is making someone happier. A smile or kind word doesn't cost anything but has such a profound impact. It is such a big cliché, but we are really 'helping' our patients, and not just optically."
One of the most memorable experiences for Jhanara was referring a patient for a neurological defect. "The patient has been having eye tests elsewhere where a problem with his left eye was being monitored. Whilst in hospital, the patient noticed a drop in his vision and called us to visit once he was home. I knew there was something going on and after urgently referring, it transpired it was a brain tumour which was operated on and saved his life! A moment I will always remember."
Family and Support
Jhanara quickly fell in love with domiciliary optometry and today she could not imagine returning the high street. Along her journey she has had her share of family growth and personal loss but she has been appreciative of the support available at OutsideClinic. To Jhanara, joining OutsideClinic wasn't just joining a company; it meant becoming part of a family that respects her time and commitments beyond the workplace.
"During all of my pregnancies, I have been offered wonderful support by the team, and during the last stages of my mother-in-law's life, the company was incredibly supportive and recognized the importance of me spending time with my family. On a day-to-day basis, the support is fantastic, particularly from the professional services team - they should be commended on the fantastic job they do."
Adapting and Thriving Through Change:
In her 14-year tenure, Jhanara has been a witness to substantial changes within the organisation. She has seen the transition in ownership to Optimism Health Group and the relocation of the head office, showcasing the company's unwavering dedication to growth and progress.
While these transformations were unfolding, the global COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented challenge. Jhanara was quick to applaud the company for its effective response, emphasising how the team rose to the occasion. She remarked, "The company's ability to adapt to the evolving landscape and make necessary alterations to our Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) was exceptional. An example was when one of my optometrist colleagues ingeniously crafted a bespoke breath shield. The company also made substantial investments in personal protective equipment and pantascopes to ensure the safety of both our dedicated staff and our cherished patients."
Domiciliary vs. High Street
Jhanara's 14-year journey has solidified her commitment to domiciliary care, leaving the high street firmly in the rearview mirror. She acknowledges the differences between the two and how enjoyable the job can be if you are committed. She said: "Everything is different in domiciliary compared to high street. From the equipment, order of tests and communication strategies. For those new to domiciliary it can be daunting at first but as the routine becomes natural, the job is so enjoyable and the equipment is fantastic in particular the fundus camera - it has been the greatest asset to our armoury of equipment and it always brings the wow factor."
In her role as a Professional Services Optometrist, Jhanara has had the privilege of engaging in diverse projects, from media campaigns to presentations, experiences she genuinely relishes. She also expressed her deep appreciation for the exceptional career development opportunities. "The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events are something I eagerly anticipate; they serve as reminders of how much I enjoy learning. The unwavering support we receive is truly valuable."
In Jhanara's own words, her patients are the "best patients ever." Her 14-year journey stands as a testament to the profound connection that dedicated professionals forge with the lives they touch. Here's to many more years of providing incredible service, cherishing family moments, and nurturing patient care.
